Types of Membership

This section provides details of the membership requirements depending on the category of membership and is intended to offer guidance to those who are interested in joining the Irish Planning Institute.

The Irish Planning Institute has six categories of membership:

1. Student

Persons engaged in a programme of formal study leading to an accredited planning qualification/degree from a planning school, which meets the educational requirements of the Institute, are eligible for student membership of the Institute.

2. Graduate

Criteria

Graduate Membership is available to planners who have attained the relevant profession planning qualification, but who have not, as yet, obtained the necessary experience to qualify for Corporate Membership.

Entry Requirements Candidates for Graduate Membership must comply with one of the following criteria:

(a) A person who holds a recognized or accredited planning qualification or degree from a planning school, which meets the educational requirements of the Institute, and who has not gained the required experience to qualify for Corporate membership

or

(b) A person who holds a planning qualification at degree or equivalent level, which is not accredited or recognised by the Institute, and which was obtained within the European Union/European Economic Area, and is at a level which is equivalent to the planning qualifications or degrees that are recognized or accredited by the Institute, and who has not gained the required experience to qualify for Corporate membership

or

(c) A person who holds a planning qualification at degree or equivalent level, which is not accredited or recognised by the Institute, and which was obtained outside the European Union/EEA area, and where their course was broadly in accordance with the Institute’s Educational Guidelines and who has not gained the required experience to qualify for Corporate membership.

Applying

The current rate for Graduate Membership for new graduate members is €100. Once sufficient experience has been obtained, the Graduate member must apply for corporate membership). Complete online Graduate Membership Application form. 

Provide a copy of the degree certificate (s)

Graduate membership is only be available until the end of the calendar year 5 years after election as Graduate Member. An application for Corporate Membership should be made as soon as you feel you have a sufficient period of post-qualification practical experience of work as a professional planner, see below.

3. Corporate

Current rate for Corporate Membership is €220

Criteria

Corporate Membership is the foremost membership category within the Institute and is open to planners who have reached a required standard of knowledge, skill and professional responsibility. The entry requirements for Corporate Membership include both a satisfactory educational qualification at an appropriate level and also a sufficient period of post-qualification practical experience of work as a professional planner. Candidates for Corporate Membership must comply with one of the following criteria:

Entry to Corporate membership shall be open to those who have reached a standard of knowledge, skill, academic qualification to Level 8 or higher of the Irish National Framework of Qualifications or EQF equivalent and the professional experience necessary to engage in planning.

(a) A person who holds a recognized or accredited planning qualification or degree from a planning school, which meets the educational requirements of the Institute (see accredited courses), and who has gained two years’ satisfactory experience in planning after obtaining the relevant qualification;

or

(b) A professionally-qualified planner who is a full / corporate member of another national planning institute or national association that is a full member of the European Council of Spatial Planners (ECTP), and who has gained two years’ satisfactory experience in planning after obtaining the relevant membership;

or

(c) A person who holds a planning qualification at degree or equivalent level, which is not accredited or recognised by the Institute, and which was obtained within the European Union/European Economic Area, and is at a level which is equivalent to the planning qualifications or degrees that are recognized or accredited by the Institute, and has gained two years’ satisfactory experience in planning after obtaining the qualification;

or

(d) A person who holds a planning qualification at degree or equivalent level, which is not accredited or recognised by the Institute, and which was obtained within the European Union/European Economic Area, and is at a level which is not equivalent, as defined under Article 11(d) of EU Directive 2005/36/EC, to the planning qualifications or degrees that are recognized or accredited by the Institute, and who satisfies the Institute that their post qualification experience in planning is such that they are competent to practice planning in Ireland. (Persons to whom this paragraph applies, who cannot satisfy the Institute with regard to their post qualification experience, may be entitled to Corporate Membership by either passing the Institute’s Test of Professional Competence or successfully completing any period of adaptation required by the Institute, under the provisions of the Directive, and also demonstrating at least two years’ satisfactory experience in planning after obtaining their qualification or passing the Test/completing the period of adaptation, as appropriate.)

or

(e) A person who holds a planning qualification at degree or equivalent level, which is not accredited or recognised by the Institute, and which was obtained outside the European Union/EEA area, and where their course was broadly in accordance with the Institute’s Educational Guidelines, and who satisfies the Institute that their post qualification experience in planning is such that they are competent to practice planning in Ireland.

Action Required

Upload a CV detailing:

  • Organisation in which you were employed;
  • Position held;
  • Dates of commencement and termination;
  • Type of work in which you were engaged;
  • The time spent on each area of work;
  • Your personal contribution to, and your level of responsibility in such work and;
  • Publications.

In addition, in the case of category (b), provide written confirmation from the institute/association concerned of current full/corporate membership from the relevant national institute / association that is a full member of the European Council of Spatial Planners.

In addition, in the case of categories (c), (d) and (e), provide details of the educational courses concerned, and - if the candidate wishes to be considered under category (d) - a statement as to whether the candidate wishes to opt for the test of Professional Competence or for the period of adaptation, and if the latter, the means by which the candidate proposes to complete this period of adaptation (including the written consent of the Corporate Member/Fellow or other professional planner of similar level under whom this period of adaptation is to be carried out).

4. Affiliate

Annual Subscription

Current rate for Affiliate Membership is €120

Criteria

In accordance with its stated aims of being a learned and professional body, the Institute shall include as eligible for Non-Corporate membership persons who have a primary or post-primary degree (or equivalent) related to planning in the opinion of the Council, who have been engaged for a minimum of two years in approved research or practice related to planning, and who have made a special contribution, in the opinion of the Council, to planning in Ireland.

Action Required

Submit the relevant application form online and send to the IPI Head Office. Include a copy of degree certificate(s)

AND

Upload a CV detailing:

  • Organisation in which you were employed;
  • Position held;
  • Dates of commencement and termination;
  • Type of work in which you were engaged;
  • The time spent on each area of work;
  • Your personal contribution to, and your level of responsibility in such work and;
  • Publications

AND

Have two current Corporate Members or Fellows sign the application form. Candidates should also include a detailed CV of planning work experience to be initialled by the Members who have signed the application form.

 

5. Fellow

Complete online Fellowship Application form.

In order to be eligible for Fellowship of the Irish Planning Institute a member must fulfill the following criteria:

1. The person must have been a Corporate Member of the Institute for a continuous period of not less than ten years

2. The person must have at least 20 years professional planning experience

3. The person must have either served on the Council of the Institute as a Corporate Member of Council, or been an officer of one of the Institute's Branches, or a combination of the two, for a period of not less than four years, or must have made, in the opinion of the Institute's Council, an important contribution to the development of the Institute.

Action Required

An application must be made in writing to the Secretary of the Council outlining the dates claimed for the continuous period of ten years as a Corporate Member of the Institute and including a detailed CV showing at least 20 years professional planning experience; and either:

(a) Statement of the years in which the applicant was a Corporate Member of the Council of the Institute, and/or an officer of one of the Institute's branches; or

(b) Evidence/ Statement of how the applicant considers himself/herself to have made an important contribution to the development of the Institute.

Annual Subscription

The current annual subscription for a Fellow is €220

6. Honorary

This is awarded by the Institute's Council, as per the Institute's Articles of Association.
